In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
